Fabric and materials
Suggested fabrics: Cotton lawn, poplin, seersucker, voile, linen, viscose, double gauze.
For UK 12, as it comes:
- Main fabric: 2.1 m of 115 cm wide, 1.8 m of 140 cm wide, 1.8 m of 150 cm wide
- Thread to match
- Elastic 3.5 cm wide, 67 cm
- A safety pin to thread it
How to sew it
- Sew the panels of each tier together along their short sides to make a loop (leave one seam of the top tier open for a zip, or for pockets sew them in first). Neaten and press.
- Sew a pocket bag to each side seam of the top tier between the notches, right sides together, before closing those seams. Sew round the bags as you close the seams, and press the pockets to the front.
- Run two rows of long stitches along the top of the skirt and draw them up evenly to fit the waist casing or waistband.
- Join the casing’s short ends, leaving a gap in the seam for the elastic, fold it in half lengthwise and sew it to the skirt. Thread the elastic through, overlap its ends and sew them, then close the gap.
- Press up the hem, turn under the raw edge and stitch. Press.
