Drawing on paper

Print a grid, colour it in by hand, and scan or photograph it back in.

Tools › Draw on paper… prints a sheet to design on by hand, then reads it back as a new pattern, in the colours you used.

  1. Under 1. Print a sheet, give it a name and choose how many ends (across) and picks (down) the grid has, and the paper. The preview shows the sheet; the squares get as big as the paper allows (turning it sideways for wide grids).
  2. Print it, or Download PDF to print later, at 100% (actual size): the 10 cm scale at the bottom checks it.
  3. Fill in each square where the warp shows on top, and leave weft squares blank. Colour the strip above the grid with each end’s warp colour and the strip on the right with each pick’s weft colour, or leave them blank. Felt tips, coloured pencils or a dark pencil all work.
  4. Under 2. Read it back, choose a scan, or Take a photo of the whole page, flat and in good light. The QR code says which sheet it is and its name; the corner squares line it up, even photographed at an angle.
  5. Check the preview, then Open as a new pattern. The threading, tie-up and treadling are worked out from what you drew, with as few shafts and treadles as it needs. Use Save to keep it.
